Coaching

Roddy Wood takes much enjoyment from coaching, helping up and coming players improve their game and horsemanship.

He has long been worried about the small numbers of young New Zealanders taking up the sport. To this end, he can be found coaching school-age polo players three afternoons a week at Waireka. Establishing a program of coaching and tournaments has been a passion of Roddy's which has resulted in the sport becoming extremely popular in South Island schools. Players from the age of 10 are competing in the regular competitions with some outstanding young players beginning to standout and compete in club level tournaments.

Overseas visitors to the polo school usually stay in nearby Christchurch City, just half an hour's drive from the school, where they can choose from a wide range of accommodation, from luxury hotels to more modest surroundings. It's a great base from which to explore the city's hundreds of restaurants, nightclubs, and entertainment. Chukkas  and pony hire are available to visiing polo players and arranged according to ability.

For those wanting to stay closer to the school, Waireka has a list of recommended accommodation, for luxury lodges to quality bed-and-breakfast establishments.
